Indian boxer Amit Panghal has won the gold medal in the ongoing Boxing World Cup in Cologne, Germany. On Saturday, Phanghal was awarded the gold medal after his opponent bounced back in the final in the 52kg category.
Panghal was given a walkover by Germany’s Argishti Tertarayan. Asian Games champion Panghal had earlier defeated France World Championship bronze medalist Bilal Benanma 5–0 in the semi-finals to secure his place in the final.
World Cup Boxing in Germany
Apart from Panghal, Satish Kumar (over 91kg) could not make it to the final of the ongoing Cologne Boxing World Cup in Germany due to injury on Saturday, which led to his satisfaction with the silver medal.
Commonwealth Games silver medalist Satish Kumar defeated France’s Jamili Dini Moindez in the semi-finals to advance to the finals.
Sakshi and Manisha (57 kg) reached the finals in the women’s section. Now these two boxers will be face to face in the title match. Manisha beat two-time medalist compatriot Sonia Lather 5–0 at the World Championships while Sakshi defeated Germany’s Ramona Graf 4–1.
Asian Games bronze medalist Pooja Rai, however, lost to Nocheka Fontjin of the Netherlands. In the men’s 57kg, Mohammad Hasamuddin and Gaurav Solanki also had to settle for bronze. Hasmuddin was defeated by local boxer Hamasat Shadalov while Solanki was defeated by Samuel Cristourie of France.
