Dehradun: Scientists in Uttarakhand have found a glacial lake six kilometers above the Rishiganga River. The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, which traced the lake, however, said that it was not yet known whether the lake posed any threat to the population living in low-lying areas.
Kalachand Sai, director of the institute, said, “A team of scientists of the institute conducted an aerial survey of the upper area of Rishiganga on Sunday, a day after the disaster and saw a newly formed glacial lake there.”
He said that the lake may have been formed due to the recent avalanche. Sai said that the team has also taken some photos of the lake from about 400 meters away from the helicopter.
