Mumbai: In these days, politics is taking place with two characters of history of three and a half hundred years old. These characters are the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb and the Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji. Shiv Sena wants to change the name of Aurangabad city of Maharashtra to Badal Sambhajinagar but the Congress has reservations about it.
Aurangabad, located in the Marathwada region of central Maharashtra, has historical significance. Previously the name of this city was Fatehnagar. Aurangzeb captured this side and named it Aurangabad. Aurangabad used to be the capital of Deccan region during the Mughal Sultanate. Aurangzeb’s tomb is also in Aurangabad.
A large part of Aurangzeb’s reign was in conflict with Marathas. Aurangzeb clashed first with the Maratha kingdom’s founder Chhatrapati Shivaji and then with his son Chhatrapati Sambhaji. The Shiv Sena wants to give their name to this city.
The case first went to the High Court, then to the Supreme Court. Before the court could hear any decision, there was a change of power in Maharashtra. In 1999, the Congress-NCP government replaced the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition government. The new Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh changed the government’s stand in the court and the nomination could not take place.
At present, Shiv Sena has power here and on the pretext of renaming, Shiv Sena wants to stay in power by playing the card of Marathi Asmita and Hindutva. In the Aurangabad edition of its newspaper Saamana, Shiv Sena writes Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar. Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut recently said that Balasaheb Thackeray had changed the name of High Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar 30 years ago, now only the name has been changed on paper.
It is compulsion for the Congress to oppose nomination. Muslims live largely in Aurangabad, and Asaduddin Owaisi’s party mim has made his mark here. The MP here is from Imtiaz Jalil mim. The Congress is opposing the renaming to regain its minority vote bank.
