Batting first after losing the toss at the Haggle over field, New Zealand scored 184 for five in 20 overs thanks to Conway’s unbeaten 99 off 59 balls with the help of 10 fours and three sixes.
New Zealand beat Australia by 53 runs in the first T20 match to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, thanks to a superb innings by Devon Conway (99 not out) and excellent bowling by leg-spinner Ish Sodhi (4/28). Apart from Sodhi, Tim Southee and Trent Boult got two wickets each, and Kyle Jamison and Mitchell Santner got one wicket each for New Zealand.
Batting earlier, the Kiwi team had a very poor start and lost the wickets of Marten Guptill (0), Tim Seifert (1) and captain Kane Williamson (12) for just 19 runs. However Conway took over the innings with Glenn Phillips and the two batsmen shared a 74-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Phillips was dismissed by Marcus Stoinis. Phillips scored 30 runs off 20 balls with three sixes. Conway then proceeded to open the innings with James Neesham and both added 47 runs for the fifth wicket. However, Neesham was dismissed by Zhai Richardson. Neesham scored 26 runs off 15 balls with the help of three fours.
Conway took the innings from the other end but missed out on a century as the over was over. Mitchell Santner remained unbeaten on seven runs with the help of a four off five balls. For Australia, Richardson and Daniel Sams took two wickets and Stoynis took one wicket.
The Kangaroo team, which started chasing the target, also started badly and lost four wickets for 19 runs. Marsh made some attempts but the Australian innings was shattered as he was out. For Australia, Ashton Egger scored 23, Matthew Wade scored 12 and Richardson scored 11 while Adam Jampa scored 13 not out. The second T20 match between the two teams will be played in Dunedin on 25 February.
